Abstract

Cities and communities around the world are increasingly deploying advanced technologies such as Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems for improved efficiency, convenience, safety, and better quality of life. The Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) program led by National Institute of Standards and Technology has successfully nurtured hundreds of projects led by municipal governments and technology providers over the past years with the goal to help build smart infrastructure using advanced technologies. However, the issues of security and privacy of the smart city solutions have not been generally considered a top priority. To address this issue, U.S. Department Homeland Security’ Science and Technology Directorate has joined forces with NIST in the 2018 round of GCTC to encourage smart cities and communities to embrace security and privacy as the first-order concern.
