Abstract

Core/shell Fe3dO4/MnxFe3-xO4 nanoparticles were synthesized in a single reaction using molecular precursors with different thermal stability. Scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy confirms the core/shell structure. Atomic absorption, Mossbauer spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism are used to determine the precise stoichiometry of the shell. Vibrating sample magnetometry reveals the magnetization as a function of field and temperature, while small angle neutron scattering shows evidence of both parallel and perpendicular magnetic correlations, suggesting multi-particle coherent spin canting involving both the surface and interior of the nanoparticles. Atomistic simulations help to understand the underlying mechanism of spin canting.
