Abstract
Long carrier lifetime is what makes hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) high performance photovoltaic materials. The microscopic mechanism behind the unusually long carrier lifetime of greater than equal to} 1 υs is not well understood. Here we show that the screening of band-edge charge carriers by rotation of organic cation molecules is a major contribution to the prolonged lifetime. By investigating temperature dependence of band-edge time-resolved photoluminescence and crystal structure of HC(NH2)2PbI3, we revealed that the band-edge carrier lifetime increases dramatically from approximately equal}1 ns to approximately equal}300 ns as the system enters into a phase with high rotational entropy. Thus, searching for HOIPs with high rotational entropy over a wide range of temperature may be a key to achieve superior solar cell performance.
