Abstract
The smart grid, or grid modernization, integrates new interoperable and secure sensing,control, communications, information technologies and power technologies to increase the system efficiency, reliability, resilience, and sustainability of our electric grid. This chapter (in Smart Grid Handbook) provides an overview of the key benefits and characteristics of smart grids, and describes new architectural concepts, advanced technologies and standards for smart grids.
