Abstract
A procedure is presented whereby the fossil fuel community may design and mix SRMs in different proportions and thereby produce in their laboratory fossil fuel standards for selected elements of almost any desired concentration with uncertainties that are calculable and traceable to NIST SRM certified values. The use of this method gives the SRM user a continuum of concentrations available for calibrants and quality control test samples. Unlike calibrants prepared from high purity components, the "designer method" enables the SRM user to create a customized series of calibrants in the fossil fuel matrix of interest. The 2010 Edition includes all related publications, videos that demonstrate the "designer method" in both liquid and solid matrices, a detailed explanation of Interval-repeatability, the statistical tool used to verify blends that is based upon the established repeatability limit (r) of the analytical method employed, and PC software to assist analysts through the entire process of producing standards of intermediate concentrations from existing fossil fuel SRMs.
