Lisa E. Kilpatrick (Fed)

Research Chemist

Dr. Lisa E. Kilpatrick is a research chemist at NIST with a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Northern Illinois University.  She completed her post-doctoral fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she used mass spectrometry to study post-translational modifications of lens proteins related to cataract formation.

Roles and Responsibilities

Dr. Kilpatrick has key roles in ensuring the quality and reliability of NIST’s measurement services:

  • Research Chemist:  Develops advanced analytical methods in protein quantification.
  • Group Quality Manager:  Oversees quality assurance activities, in compliance with NIST’s ISO-accredited quality system, which supports the production of high-quality, traceable reference materials.

Current Research

Dr. Kilpatrick’s current research focuses on protein characterization and quantification, with an emphasis on:

  • Developing measurement procedures for clinically relevant proteins, such as vitamin D-binding protein, using isotope dilution mass spectrometry.
  • Advancing high-resolution mass spectrometry techniques to identify low-abundance post-translational modifications of proteins.
  • Improving allergen identification and quantification methods for tree nuts, using mass spectrometry and ELISA.
