Abstract
Technologies for creating smart manufacturing systems or factories are becoming increasingly abundant. However, manufacturers, large and small, need to correctly select and prioritize these technology adoptions. In addition, other improvements may be necessary, along with a technology adoption, in order to receive the greatest benefit from the technology. This paper proposes a method for assessing a factory for its readiness to become smart: a factory that can continuously maintain and improve its performance with intensive use of information in response to the changing environments . The proposed readiness level provides an indication on the current state with respect to a reference model and helps manufacturers to develop an improvement plan. Through validation analysis, it is shown that the assessment has a positive correlation with the operational performance.
