The National Bureau of Standards (NBS) has provided Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) since 1906. Originally called Standard Samples, these references, are chemical compositions whose property values have been accurately determined and certified.
SRMs are used throughout industry and the scientific community to calibrate and evaluate measurement instruments and test methods. They are selected for development based on need and demand of the technical community. Today there are nearly 1,200 reference materials available. NIST sells over 30,000 SRMs annually.
The Standard Reference Materials online exhibit is based on a NIST Museum physical exhibit currently on display in the Hall of Standards at the NIST Gaithersburg, MD campus. At present, only NIST staff, associates, their registered guests, and conference attendees are able to tour the Museum.
