Dr. Ng and Mr. Polidoro are recognized for developing innovative methods for predicting air-leakage rates in commercial buildings, and for providing the building community with a tool to estimate the significant energy impacts of such air leakage, which have historically been ignored in commercial buildings. Their research has resulted in the discovery of new relationships between air leakage, building characteristics, and weather conditions, which they have implemented through a “plug-and-play” simulation tool. Their efforts allow the creation of energy simulations to incorporate the effects of air leakage on building energy usage, enabling building designers to easily and more accurately predict the energy savings from commercial-building air-sealing efforts.
