The group is recognized for the establishment of an accurate database of human skin reflectance measurements for wavelengths ranging from the shortwave infrared to the ultraviolet spectral region. The measurements performed on 100 human-subject volunteers using a rigorous protocol developed by the team and approved by the NIST Institutional Review Board reveal significant differences between subjects. The results have been published and a database of the measurements has been made available on the NIST website for use in advancing optical medical imaging, computer graphics, machine vision, and biometrics and other security methods.
