The group is recognized for successfully executing major component replacements during a three-month outage at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) reactor. This work required planning years in advance and included the procurement of engineering services to overhaul the primary reactor cooling system, an in-house redesign of the mechanisms that operate the reactor control rods, and major maintenance of other reactor cooling systems. During the outage, the group instituted daily coordination efforts with the entire Reactor Operations and Engineering staff that kept tasks on schedule and on budget. The group’s accomplishment has greatly enhanced the future reliability of the NCNR as a scientific user facility.
