Dr. Leibrandt is recognized for the development and dissemination of open-source hardware and software designs and fabrication files for a state-of-the-art FPGA-based fast digital feedback controller. The designs have been published in the scientific literature, and the source files and instructions are all available online. These controllers allow for the modernization and simplification of aging control electronics across many NIST laboratories, and many hundreds of the controllers are being adopted by technical practitioners inside and outside of NIST. Developing these controllers and helping other NIST researchers adopt and use them was not Dr. Leibrandt’s main job, and he did all of this on top of his regular job of performing world-class research on trapping ions and building atomic clocks.
