The group is recognized for its rapid, high-quality response to a national need as part of the Head Health Challenge III: Advanced Materials for Impact Mitigation, a NIST partnership with the NFL, Under Armour and GE aimed at fostering new impact-absorbing materials to mitigate the debilitating effects of head trauma. In a matter of months, the team developed and deployed new measurement tools, methods, and data analysis capabilities necessary to meet the extremely demanding testing schedule of this high-visibility prize competition. The resulting measurement data enabled the Head Health Challenge Judges to rationally select the best proposed materials to move into the final competition, and provided a benchmark for the materials' improvement.
