Dr. Iadicola is recognized for advancing the use of digital image correlation for state-of-the-art strain measurement during mechanical deformation. The work involved rigorous three-dimensional shape measurement and characterization of the uncertainties in displacement, strain, and strain gradients. These precise quantifications were critical to establishing the repeatability, accuracy, and precision of digital image correlation, as well as compatibility with existing protocols, for adoption by industry for the design of sheet-metal forming dies. Dr. Iadicola’s efforts resulted in a revised ASTM standard for the determination of forming-limit curves and the foundation of the International Digital Image Correlation Society.
