Mr. Mejias is recognized for his leadership in the removal of 255 unwanted radioactive sources kept on the Gaithersburg campus -- some for over 50 years. His thorough understanding of Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and radioactive-waste-disposal site criteria were instrumental in achieving safe disposal of the sources in compliance with the NIST license and other regulatory requirements. His attention to detail and close interaction with the contractor ensured the project was completed on time, on budget, and in a safe and regulatory-compliant manner. This effort significantly reduced potential health and safety risks to NIST staff and the liability of possessing radioactive material with no intended use.
