The group is recognized for developing exceptionally accurate gas standards for the three most important atmospheric greenhouse gases in air: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Two sets of concentration standards were developed: Northern Continental Air (SRM 1720) and Southern Oceanic Air (SRM 1721). These standards contain low, background levels of the three target species in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This work harmonizes and extends previously existing gas standards maintained by participants in the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Atmosphere Watch program with standards needed by other science organizations that conduct research on the global carbon cycle and climate dynamics.
