NIIMBL Welcomes Dr. Michael Tarlov as Director of Technology Strategy

The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Tarlov has joined the Institute as Director of Technology Strategy. In this role, Dr. Tarlov will provide strategic direction for NIIMBL’s technology portfolio, helping ensure the Institute’s priorities and investments address the evolving needs of the biopharmaceutical industry.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Tarlov to NIIMBL,” said Kelvin Lee, NIIMBL Institute Director. “He is well-known in our community for his technical depth, thoughtful perspectives, and emphasis on driving innovation for the biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry. His experience and expertise will help us ensure NIIMBL’s technical portfolio is balanced, industry-led, creates value, and strengthens our industrial ecosystem.”

NIIMBL helps lead the collaborative advancement of innovative biopharmaceutical manufacturing technologies and workforce excellence that secures U.S. competitiveness. NIIMBL helps industry navigate a rapidly evolving biopharmaceutical manufacturing innovation landscape by bringing together companies, academic institutions, nonprofits, and government partners in a precompetitive environment to develop solutions for current and future manufacturing challenges.

Dr. Tarlov joins NIIMBL from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where he built a distinguished career advancing measurement science and standards for the biopharmaceutical industry. As Chief of the Biomolecular Measurement Division and leader of NIST’s Biomanufacturing Program, he led efforts to develop measurement tools and standards for complex biologic therapeutics, including protein, nucleic acid, and cell-based therapies. He oversaw the development of key industry resources, including NISTmAb and the NISTCHO reference cell line, in collaboration with NIIMBL. Dr. Tarlov earned his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Minnesota.

“NIIMBL provides a fantastic model for bringing together stakeholders from across the biopharmaceutical manufacturing community to tackle challenges that would be difficult for a single organization to solve alone,” said Dr. Tarlov. “I am excited to join NIIMBL and help shape technology investments and collaborations that accelerate innovation, advance manufacturing capabilities, and prepare the industry for future needs.”
