The National Council on Weights and Measures (NCWM) recently completed the 2024 National Price Verification Survey together with support from NIST OWM and Weights and Measure officials. This survey, conducted by 26 States and 20 local and county jurisdictions which amassed over 7400 inspections, was critical to obtaining information to maintain the integrity of pricing practices and support equitable commerce across the U.S. By systematically evaluating the accuracy of pricing in various retail environments, the survey not only highlighted compliance with existing regulations but also bolstered consumer confidence in the fairness of day-to-day commercial transactions.

The 2024 Price Verification Survey revealed both strengths and weaknesses within pricing systems, providing valuable insights for stakeholders who are regulators, retailers, and consumers alike. The data collected enabled these stakeholders to identify trends, address discrepancies, and implement corrective measures, ensuring that consumers are charged fairly for the products they purchase. Additionally, it underscores the importance of ongoing training and education for retailers, ensuring they remain vigilant about pricing accuracy.

As the retail landscape continues to evolve with the advent of emerging technology and new pricing strategies, ongoing vigilance will be essential to ensure consumer protection and market fairness. The survey not only serves as a benchmark for current practices but also as a catalyst for continuous pricing improvement within the retail industry.

The 2024 NCWM National Price Verification Survey is more than just a regulatory measure; it serves as a vital component of “checks and balances” for a fair marketplace. By industry prioritizing pricing accuracy, it can enhance consumer trust, promote competitive fairness, and ultimately contribute to a more equitable economic environment. Moving forward, it will be crucial for all stakeholders to collaborate and adapt to ensure that pricing integrity remains a fundamental principle in retail transactions.

This National Survey was a collaboration between NIST OWM and the NCWM, as well as State agencies. This partnership is essential for ensuring consistency and accuracy in measurement standards. OWM looks forward to participating in future endeavors.
