The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) recently released the HL7 Version 2.6 Implementation Guide: Vital Records Birth and Fetal Death Reporting, Release 1 STU Release 2 - US Realm. This Implementation Guide provides a technical messaging specification for transmitting birth and fetal death-related information to enable interoperable electronic data exchanges among electronic health record systems, U.S. vital records systems, and NCHS. The NIST Implementation Guide Authoring and Management Tool (IGAMT), which is part of the NIST Testing Infrastructure that provides a platform for HL7 V2 Standards Development and Testing, was utilized to completely develop this guide.
