CHIPS Digital Twin Industry Day

Learn about the forthcoming CHIPS for America Digital Twin Manufacturing USA Institute from staff members of CHIPS and the Manufacturing USA national coordination office. Provide feedback on the gaps the institute should address and its member-led research projects.  The agenda includes breakout sessions and brief one-on-one discussions. In order to give participants an opportunity to discuss ideas, breakout sessions will be limited to 30 people per session.

Opening Session: CHIPS Digital Twin Vision and Mission

Register for the opening session

Registration will close at 5 pm ET on Friday, February 9, 2024.

This session will be recorded and posted to chips.gov

Breakout Sessions

Registration for breakout sessions has closed.
  1. Key Research Projects

  2. Physical Testbed / Shared Research Goals

Registrants for the breakouts will be able to attend both sessions. See the Agenda below for questions that will seed the discussions.

These sessions will not be recorded. Learnings may be shared with the community without attribution.

One-on-One Meetings

Registration for one-on-one meetings has closed.

In addition, as industry is the intended beneficiary of Manufacturing USA institutes, we want to hear from industry members during brief sessions. Please limit participants to one per organization, and submit a short description of the subject of your discussion. As staff time is limited, the first 32 industry members to sign up by close of business on February 8, 2024, will be accommodated.

Meetings will take place between 3 pm and 5 pm ET on Monday, February 12, 2024. If we are able to accommodate your request, you will be alerted by email on Friday, February 9, 2024 of your meeting time.

These sessions will not be recorded. Learnings may be shared with the community without attribution.

Send Your Feedback

If you are unable to secure registration for the breakout session or meeting time that you wish, you may provide feedback regarding the CHIPS for America Digital Twin Manufacturing USA Institute to research [at] chips.gov (research[at]chips[dot]gov). Please consider answering the following questions:

 Key Research Projects

  1. In your opinion, what are the key research problems we need to solve to make digital twin tools that contribute to an accelerated innovation cycle?
  2. In your opinion, what are the most impactful digital twin problems that member-led research projects in this institute should address?
    1. How should investments in member-led projects be distributed between manufacturing readiness levels 4-7 (where solutions are often shared) versus higher MRLs (where solutions are proprietary and only general outcomes are shared)?
    2. How should we balance investment between shared industry challenges and specific member-led projects?
      • Examples of shared challenges are solutions that lead to standards for data sharing and protection, or validation and verification of model accuracy.
      • Examples of member-led projects are de-risking digital twin solutions that industry then scales up internally, rather than in a shared environment

Physical Testbed / Shared Research Goals

  1. If we set up a Manufacturing USA digital twin shared facility, what are the most important gaps for federal funds to address that can maximize innovation and participation from a company like yours?
    1. In your opinion, what should the institute invest in for your sector to get the most benefit?
    2. What kind of participation do you imagine for your company?
      • EG: sending personnel, helping to define projects
    3. If your company were to participate in a shared facility, what co-investment might you provide? Under what terms?
      • EG: funding, tools, research licenses
