The European Spallation Source - Design and Current Status

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is an accelerator driven neutron source currently under construction in Lund, Sweden by a consortium of 13 European countries. ESS consists of the world’s most powerful (up to 5 MW) superconducting proton linac producing neutrons via spallation from a tungsten target. The linac power coupled with an advanced hydrogen moderator design will result in a neutron source that is 30 – 100 times brighter than existing sources. The target will be surrounded by 15 neutron instruments with room for additional instruments later. First science is expected in 2023 with project completion planned for 2025.

This talk will briefly review the ESS design and give a detailed report on the current status of the project. The strategy of using in-kind contributions to the project will also be discussed.
