5458: NIST Handbook 133 - Chapter 4: Packages Labeled by Count, Linear Measure, Area, Thickness, and Combinations of Quantities

This 4 day seminar will focus on the NIST Handbook 133 Chapter 4 compliance requirements and test procedures for packages and products labeled by count, length, width, area and thickness. The class will include formal lecture, discussion, group exercises, audio-visual presentations, and extensive hands-on practice.

Learning Objectives:

After this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • IDENTIFY the equipment and materials needed to verify quantity declarations on packages sold by count, length, width, area, and thickness;
  • DETERMINE which packaged commodities may be tested using the test procedure packages sold by count, length, width, area, and thickness;
  • EVALUATE the variety of products and DETERMINE the correct measurement techniques and equipment.
  • IDENTIFY ways to reduce testing errors.
  • APPLY accurate count and measurements using a variety of testing equipment (e.g., steel tapes & rules, deadweight dial micrometer, gage blocks, binding straps, spring scale).
  • RECOGNIZE special testing requirements for packages labeled by linear or square.
  • APPLY accurate volumetric determinations with dry measures and a variety of linear measuring devices.

Materials & Supplies:

Participants will be provided with a notebook and class materials.

Prerequisite(s):

Students must have successfully completed a NIST taught NIST Handbook 133 - Checking the Net Contents of Packaged Goods -Basic course in 2011 or later.

Minimum Requirement(s):

To receive a Certificate of Successful Completion, students must be in attendance for the entire class and actively participate in all in-class activities. You will be assessed on your application of all the learning objectives of this course.

State Weights and Measures officials only.

Cost:

There are no registration fees for this class. However, participants are responsible for their own transportation, lodging and meal expenses.
