This document builds on research conducted by NLC and the insights of experts, city leaders, and practitioners from across the country.
Growing Your Region's Economy with Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs is a new publication by the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) Research Foundation. It highlights the innovation approaches being taken by five regional development organizations in Colorado, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin to spur job growth through new business startups or existing business expansions.
The Center for Public Policy Innovation released a report, Restoring U.S. Competitiveness: Creating Jobs and Unleashing the Potential of Small Businesses through Technology and Innovation. The report cites three elements needed for small business success: Access to Capital, Access to Technology and Access to Global Markets.

2011 Next Generation Manufacturing Study, conducted by the Manufacturing Performance Institute and released by the American Small Manufacturers Coalition, identifies key trends affecting the industry and the steps U.S. manufacturers can take now to be successful in the next generation.
The study surveyed more than 800 U.S. manufacturers nationwide. The findings show that this is a critical point in time for U.S. manufacturing, and manufacturers must assess whether they have the workforce, business systems, equipment and strategies in place to successfully compete in the future. While external factors, like the economic downturn present challenges, manufacturers can remain competitive by focusing on six strategies identified by the study as a blueprint for success.
