MEL organized and hosted the NIST Workshop on Sustainable Manufacturing: Metrics, Standards, and Infrastructure, October 13-15 2009. The primary objective of this workshop was to bring together invited experts and various stakeholders from industry, government, academia, and non-profit organizations to share current research and development efforts, and identify and discuss measurement and standards requirements for designing sustainable production processes and products. Dr. Patrick Gallagher, NIST Director, opened the workshop with his comments on NIST's current and future role in sustainable manufacturing. The workshop addressed the critical issue of developing standards, measurement science, and technology to determine various costs throughout the product life cycle. The workshop included five technical sessions: 1) government initiatives and standards, 2) university research, 3) industry/end user requirements, 4) organizations/associations work related to sustainability, and 5) software solution providers. Since the workshop was focusing mainly on industrial needs regarding sustainable manufacturing, the following panel discussions and breakout sessions addressed 1) Critical factors driving sustainable manufacturing, and 2) Decision support system for sustainable manufacturing. About 80 attendees from industry, academia, government and NGOs attended the workshop and participated in the breakout sessions.
