Vijay Srinivasan Delivers Keynote at 8th International Conference on PLM
Vijay Srinivasan delivered an invited keynote address at the 8th International Conference on Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) hosted by the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, the Netherlands on July 13, 2011. He spoke about the science and standards in support of presentation and representation of models in PLM. He highlighted the work done at NIST on 3D Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) with emphasis on standards for its presentation and the scientific work that led to standardized data models for its representation. He also outlined the NIST role in recent developments in the BPMN2 standard that provided standardized diagrammatic notations (presentation) for modeling enterprise-level engineering processes and semantic (representation) support for executing these processes.
The key messages he conveyed to the research community are: (1) Product and process models in PLM need presentations for human comprehension, as well as representations for computer processing; (2) Standards are available for some product model presentations and representations, thanks to recent scientific advances in geometrical product specification and verification; and (3) Standards are emerging for some process model presentations and representations, but we need more scientific research in this area.
