March 2012 Highlight
NIST Hosts Manufacturing Industry Standards Community
NIST initiatives and accomplishments figured prominently at the March 2012 meeting of PDES, Inc., an industry consortium participating in developing and implementing model-based engineering and manufacturing international standards. Over 60 representatives from industry attended the meeting to participate in standards advancement and implementation projects. NIST is a founding member of PDES, with staff from EL's Systems Integration and Intelligent Systems Divisions. Highlights of the March meeting featured contributions of EL staff to PDES projects. EL staff led the PDES Manufacturing Information Validation project, which is developing a test suite to verify correct exchange of manufacturing information between engineering design systems and downstream simulation, manufacturing, and quality applications. EL staff presented overviews of new NIST manufacturing initiatives, EL research in additive manufacturing, and the latest developments in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards development. The meeting included a demonstration to members of several industry forums, of the new EL STEP File Analyzer --- an EL-developed software tool for determining entity coverage of STEP exchange files.
