Jeffrey Fong was educated at the University of Hong Kong, Columbia and Stanford. He began as an engineer at Ebasco, a consulting firm in New York City, to design structures for power plants (1955-63), went to Stanford to study for a Ph.D. in applied mechanics and mathematics (1963-66), and joined NIST, then National Bureau of Standards, first as a postdoc (1966-68) and later as physicist in its Applied and Computational Mathematics Division (1968-present). A licensed New York State Professional Engineer (P.E.), Dr. Fong is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and a fellow of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
