Stephen P. Eckel Receives 2026 Arthur S. Flemming Award

Established in 1948, the Flemming Awards honor outstanding federal employees. Recognized by the president of the United States, agency heads and the private sector, the winners are selected from all areas of the federal service.

Dr. Eckel led the development of the world’s first deployable Cold Atom Vacuum Standard, a major advance with applications in semiconductor manufacturing, quantum computing, and high energy physics. He also drives innovation in quantum based thermodynamic metrology and oversees national standards for pressure, vacuum, and leak testing. His work has earned major recognition, including the PECASE and Department of Commerce Bronze Medal.
