Nicholas Butch Receives 2026 Arthur S. Flemming Award
Dr. Nicholas Butch is an expert on quantum materials and unconventional superconductivity, whose work advances our understanding of the physics underlying future quantum technologies. He leads the Condensed Matter Physics team at the NCNR.
Established in 1948, the Flemming Awards honor outstanding federal employees. Recognized by the president of the United States, agency heads and the private sector, the winners are selected from all areas of the federal service.

Dr. Butch led the research team that discovered a novel form of superconductivity in uranium ditelluride and conducted groundbreaking measurements that have uncovered numerous remarkable properties of this material. Understanding these behaviors is central to advances in the physics of Majorana fermions, which are expected to play a key part in the development of error-resistant quantum bits for future quantum computing.
His other honors include Fellowship in the American Physical Society, the NIST Samuel Wesley Stratton Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and the NIST Sigma Xi Katharine Gebbie Young Investigator Award.
