Group Leader Frank DelRio, leader of the Fatigue and Fracture Group in the Applied Chemicals and Materials Division, has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).  The ASME Committee of Past Presidents confers the Fellow grade to only 3 percent of its membership to recognize outstanding engineering achievements.  He is recognized for the development and use of materials and assemblies for small-scale mechanical applications via advancements in stand-alone and integrative mechanical measurement and microscopy techniques, with an emphasis on advanced materials in electronics, biomedical and health, infrastructure, energy, and forensics applications.  In particular, the nomination and letters of support note: (a) his research accomplishments in the increasingly impactful field have garnered national and international recognition and are best characterized as showing a rare level of extreme attention to critical detail, careful analytical insight, and thorough consideration of all relevant factors; (b) his dedication to the advancement of the measurement science of materials has been recognized by world-leading scientists and engineers, resulting in repeated requests for academic and industrial collaborations; (c) his success has generated new knowledge, accelerated progress, and improved the way diverse industrial research and development sectors use mechanical measurements and analyses for advancement of seemingly disparate technologies that share common measurement concerns; and (d) his potential for making significant, lasting contributions in science and engineering extends well beyond the laboratory and includes several examples of outreach, teaching, and leadership activities on the international stage.
