Abstract

A measurand is defined as the quantity that one intends to measure. As tissue engineering research translates into medical products, companies must prepare regulatory filings that contain many different types of measurement data that are collected about the product in order to assess its quality, safety and efficacy. Measurands for tissue engineered medical products (TEMPs) are complex, can be challenging to define and require careful thinking to interpret. Tissue engineering measurands are discussed in terms of measurement science and the concept of a measurand chart is introduced for mapping complex measurands to improve communication and strategic thinking.
