Swelling of Grafted Polymer Brushes

The end-grafting of polymer chains to surfaces provides a robust method for modifying surface properties. Such layers are increasingly being employed in applications-modifying the biocompatibility of implants, the wetting, adhesive and frictional properties of surfaces, and colloid stabilization. These applications have stimulated many scientific studies of the equilibrium and dynamical properties of grafted chains, but much remains to be understood about these constrained polymer layers. We briefly summarize theoretical and experimental investigations on the influence of polymer-polymer (excluded volume) and polymer-surface interactions on the swelling of grafted polymer layers (brushes).
