Abstract

The recent establishment of the International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission Joint Technical Committee 1/Subcomittee 37 (ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 37) on Biometrics is a major development in international standardization. This article briefly reviews what is happening technically in the field of biometrics, explains why international standards are now needed, and describes how the new subcommittee has been organized to progress its initial program of work.The ISO Bulletin keeps the International Standards community and industry informed of progress and the latest events happening in the committees and subcommittees of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
