Abstract

Experimental comparisons of 3D, 2D, and text versions of an information visualization tool, NIRVE (NIST Information Retrieval Visualization Engine) 1, indicated that interface utility depends on the match between task demands and visualization properties. A preliminary task analysis identified task components underlying this interaction and suggested design changes for visualization tools used to examine large sets of unstructured data.
