Abstract

This paper represents a summary of a Workshop held in Gaithersburg, MD, on May 30-31, 2002, to discuss technical issues relative to the potential health issues associated with the inhalation of crystalline silica. The primary objective of the Workshop was to bring together experts in the field of crystalline silica to review recent scientific developments related to the complex biocompatibility of crystalline silica particles, and to develop plans for future activities that could lead to the best possible regulatory decisions. Short descriptions of the presentations are provided, and the major conclusions of the Workshop are summarized.
