Abstract

NIST has initiated a research program for improving the quality of the data input for making economic sustainability assessments of polymeric infrastructure materials through improvements in the measurement science for this data. Sustainability assessments are made using an economic sustainability decision tool. The reliability of sustainability assessments is limited by the quality of the input data. Service life estimates have the greatest impact on sustainability assessments and yet are most suspect. Industry requested that NIST improve the measurement science for predicting the service life of polymeric materials. A NIST/industry consortium was established, and its mission was successfully completed in 2008. Achievements of the consortium are highlighted.
