Abstract

The NIST Virtual Museum is an online repository of information related to the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. It is intended for a general audience. The NIST Virtual Museum includes online exhibits; museum news; an information desk for searching the museum Web pages and viewing related scientific papers; directions to the Virtual Museum s counterpart, the real museum in Gaithersburg, MD; and a Virtual Museum site map.The virtual exhibit space is divided into virtual rooms--gatherings of virtual artifacts, portraits, photographs, drawings, and documents which are woven together as threads of a story. The larger story of NIST is told in eight rooms. Museums, both virtual and real, are unique places where objects tell stories. A narrative unfolds as the visitor travels from room to room, viewing the objects.
