Abstract

We describe the development of two next-generation optical coatings; amorphous polymer-derived silicon carbonitride (SiCN) particles and a composite consisting of SiCN surrounding a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) core. Laser-induced damage testing of SiCN coatings at 1.064 µm and 10.6 µm indicate optical absorbance of approximately 0.87 and a damage threshold value exceeding 10 KW/cm2. This value of laser damage threshold is higher than that of bulk carbon nanotube coatings reported in literature and other ceramic coatings presently used for commercial thermopiles for high power laser measurements. The absorbance and high damage threshold value of SiCN coatings can be attributed to the presence of graphitic carbon chains and SiC nanodomains in the SiCN matrix respectively. A composite nanowire consisting of shell-core of SiCN-MWCNTs is expected to have better performance than pure SiCN due to enhanced thermal conductivity and the intrinsic optical absorbance of the MWCNT core. Materials characterization was performed using focused ion beam scanning electron microscope, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy.
