Melting Equilibria of the BaF2-CuOx System

Since the BaF2-CuOx system is a limiting binary of the overall quaternary reciprocal Ba,Y,Cu//F,O phase diagram, it provides an important frame of reference for studying the more complicated multi-component system. The phase diagrams of the BaF2-CuOx system were determined under 0.1 mPa O2 (BaF2-CuO) and under 0.1 mPa Ar (BaF2-Cu2O). The phase diagram of these two systems are similar. No intermediate binary compound was found in either system. There is experimental evidence that supports a possible small two-liquid immiscibility field in the BaF2-CuO system. A series of schematic ternarydiagrams showing the oxidation/reduction aspects of the melting equilibria with increasing temperature is presented.
