Abstract
In an IEEE 802.11 network, a single user can reduce the performance of all other users attached to the same access point. To overcome this problem, we propose to take advantage of the increasing number of devices supporting multiple network interfaces. We also propose to use the Media Independent Handover architecture developed by the IEEE 802.21 Working Group. In this paper, we describe a load-balancing algorithm which uses this architecture to distribute users among different wireless access networks in order to improve the overall network throughput. We show how this can be done in an IEEE 802.11/ IEEE 802.16 heterogeneous environment.
