Abstract

The surface properties of calcium phosphate salts, such as hydroxyapatite (OHAp), fluoroapatite (Fap) and octacalcium phosphate (OCP), determine their overall interfacial behavior, which includes processes such as adsorption, chemical uptake and exchange, dissolution, nucleation, crystal growth, wettability, and adhesion. These properties are essential to understanding the use of these salts as catalysts, chromatographic columns in protein chemistry, and biomaterials for dental and bone applications, as well as to understanding many of the properties and functions of calcified tissues such as bone and tooth. They also control factors in mineral beneficiation such as flotation and flocculation, in soil science, in sugar purification, and in waste treatment processes. In this chapter, these importand properties are reviewed, especially surface composition, surface charge, adsorption behavior, as is the role these properties play in dissolution, crystallization and biological processes.
