Guide for the Selection of Chemical Detection Equipment for Emergency First Responders Guide 10006, 3rd Edition
Alim A. Fatah, Richard Arcilesi, James Peterson, Charlotte H. Lattin, Corrie Y. Wells, Joseph A. McClintock
In recognizing the needs of State and local emergency first responders, the Law Enforcement Standards Office (OLES) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), supported by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG), the U.S. Army Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center (ECBC), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Interagency Board for Equipment Standardization and Interoperability (IAB), has developed CBRNE defense equipment guides. The guides focus on CBRNE equipment in areas of detection, personal protection, decontamination, and communication. This third edition guide includes information intended to be useful to the emergency first responder community in the selection of chemical agent (CA) and toxic industrial chemical/toxic industrial material (TIC/TIM) detection techniques and equipment for different applications. It includes an updated market survey of chemical detection technologies and commercially available detectors known to the authors as of December 2006. Brief technical discussions are presented that consider the principles of operation of the various technologies. These may be ignored by readers who find them too technical, while those wanting additional technical information can obtain it from the extensive list of references that is included in appendix A and the equipment data sheets provided in the corresponding data sheets in the appendices. This document is an update of the "Guide for the Selection of Chemical Agent and Toxic Industrial Material Detection Equipment for Emergency First Responders", NIJ Guide 10000 published in June 2000 (1st edition) and DHS Guide 100-04, March 2005 (2nd Edition) and developed to assist the emergency first responder community in the evaluation and purchase of chemical detection equipment.
