Abstract

The Atomic Energy Levels Data Center at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in cooperation with other laboratories indicated above, is critically evaluating and compiling energy levels, wavelengths, and energy level classifications of atomic spectral lines. Much of this work is concentrated on spectra of the first 30 elements, which is the region of the periodic table of greatest astrophysical interest. The AEL Data Center is a part of the Atomic Spectroscopy Group at NIST. This group has for many years been an important contributor of atomic spectroscopic data for astrophysical applications. We made the accurate measurements of the platinum hollow-cathode spectrum used for wavelength calibration of the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph [1]. More recent examples include our extensive measurements and energy level analyses of heavy element spectra for interpretation of spectra of CP stars, especially chi Lupi (see paper by C.J. Sansonetti and J. Reader, these proceedings). The AEL Data Center monitors the literature on atomic spectra and maintains computer-accessible bibliographic files. Since 1979 we have also written seven Reports on Atomic Spectra giving extensive references to laboratory research of special interest for astronomers. [Trans. IAU XVII through XXIII, 1979-1997; see Report of Commission 14].
