Comparison of Electronics Products Standards for Sustainability

Abstract

This paper focuses on electronics product standards in relation to sustainability. Sustainability can be viewed as the ability of the current generation to meet its own need while protecting the environment so that the future generations can also meet their needs. Electronics are often found in products around us and could potentially contain harmful substances such as lead, or mercury. Therefore, electronics products need to be governed by strict regulatory standards. Various national and international organizations have provided various standards and guidelines of electronic products. This paper aims to analyze and summarize standards on electronics products. The standards discussed in the paper include: (a) Restriction on Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), (b) Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipments (WEEE), (c) Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), (d) Energy Star, and (e) Standard for Environmental Assessment of Personal Computer Products (EPEAT IEEE:1680).
