The National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) is working in the development of ANSI/IEEE and IEC standards for the detection of illicit trafficking of radioactive materials for homeland security applications.
NIST is also working with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) in the development of technical capability standards to address instrument performance against threat level sources. NIST is working with DNDO and the Joint Research Center (JRC) in the testing of commercially available radiation detectors based on the IEC and ANSI standards in the joint Illicit Trafficking Radiation Assessment Program+10 (ITRAP+10) testing effort between the European Union/JRC and the U.S./DNDO. NIST is working with the European Reference Network for Critical Infrastructure Protection (ERNCIP) Thematic Group for Radiological and Nuclear Threats to Critical Infrastructure National Reachback Systems for Nuclear Security in the development of the state-of-the-art report.
