Steve W. Barber (Fed)

Steve began his professional journey in 1985 as the sysadmin for a BBS in Ann Arbor, MI.  Steve originally thought he would be a software developer while system administration was just a hobby.  A couple of decades later Steve has a reputation at NIST for being a master problem solver with an innate knowledge of complex systems.  He has specialized in email administration, automating solutions to relieve repetitive system administration tasks, and high availability.Steve is one of the go-to people in ELSA and has been a paid consultant to OISM to architect complex technical solutions for the campus.

Steve has an enterprise services mindset and focuses on how to manage IT to achieve a consistent environment for his customers that also protects the organizations information assets with appropriate IT security management and controls.

Steve has been a specialist in Unix/Linux system administration desktop and server issues for NIST since 1995.   He has managed many different flavors of Unix/Linux in the enterprise in his career including Solaris, Irix, AIX, RedHat, Fedora, CentOS, HP-UX.

Prior to working at NIST, Steve was a software developer and system administrator at Schlumberger, a hardware/software test engineer at Jabil Circuit, Inc., and a system administrator and customer support specialist at Symmetrical Technologies.

Steve was awarded the DOC Bronze medal award for outstanding service in 2005.
