Mr. Chao and Mr. Comden are recognized for the development of technology for reliable tabletop Kibble balances and the delivery of systems to U.S. companies and government laboratories for the direct measurement of mass and torque within their own facilities. They proposed, secured funding for, built, and deployed a tabletop Kibble balance and torque calibrator to two Department of Defense calibration laboratories. Both devices are extensions of the original Kibble balance that made the revision of the International System of Units possible in 2019. The inherent advantage of these devices is that artifact standards are replaced at the calibration laboratory level with electrical metrology, significantly shortening the traceability chain.
