The group is cited for leading in the creation of a standard -- involving development of a mechanical measurement system and analysis of cardiac leads -- that improves the quality of life for millions of Americans. (A cardiac lead is a wire surrounded by insulation that delivers energy from a pacemaker or implantable defibrillator to the heart.) The group also had to organize a human-use-conditions study with over 100 patients for verification of the standard. This work saves patients from unnecessary surgeries and also saves the healthcare system over $100 million per year.
