The team is recognized for developing a neutron detector less than 2 millimeters thick that is over 90% efficient, yet exhibits an exceptionally high signal to noise ratio. This level of performance in such a thin detector is unprecedented. The detector design incorporates a scintillator material embedded with optical fibers that emit light (and transport it to environmentally robust photodiodes) when exposed to neutrons. This innovative detector technology has already enabled new neutron scattering instrumentation with unmatched counting efficiency and enhanced data acquisition rates.
