Ms. Sheckels is recognized for conducting and improving the NIST liquid-volume calibration service, which is the source of SI traceability for U.S. petroleum and other liquid transactions. For the past 17 years, she has calibrated approximately 60 test volumes per year for customers needing low uncertainty and quick turnaround times. Because of the financial impact of her calibrations, she often performs them under the close observation of multiple witnesses who represent the parties to a transaction. Her customers regularly report appreciation for her work. Her calibrations ensure equitable custody transfer of petroleum worth over $400 billion each year. In 2021 she helped create a lab renovation plan, including an automated volume transfer system.
